Domain-Driven Design for Complex Business Applications

Learn how domain-driven design can help developers structure complex business rules and maintain clear application boundaries.

As software becomes more complex, the biggest challenge is often organizing business rules rather than writing individual features. Domain-driven design, commonly called DDD, provides concepts for modeling software around the business domain. Developers can use entities, value objects, aggregates, domain services, and bounded contexts to establish meaningful boundaries. A bounded context can isolate a particular business model so that the same term has a precise meaning within that area of the system. DDD does not require microservices; the same concepts can be applied inside a modular monolith. The most important part is collaboration between developers and domain experts so that the software model reflects real business processes. Used appropriately, DDD can make large applications easier to reason about by keeping business rules close to the domain concepts they govern.
