Event-Driven Architecture with .NET and Message Queues

Understand how event-driven architecture and message queues can make .NET applications more resilient and scalable.

Event-driven architecture allows different parts of an application to communicate through events instead of relying only on direct synchronous calls. In a .NET application, a service can publish an event such as OrderCreated while other components consume that event to perform tasks such as sending notifications, updating analytics, or processing payments. Message brokers provide durable delivery, retry mechanisms, and buffering when downstream services are busy. This approach can improve resilience because temporary failures do not necessarily block the entire request flow. However, event-driven systems introduce additional complexity around message ordering, duplicate delivery, idempotency, observability, and eventual consistency. Developers should define clear event contracts and make consumers safe to retry. For many systems, it is useful to begin with a simple architecture and introduce messaging when asynchronous processing, decoupling, or workload isolation provides a clear benefit.
