Transactional Outbox Pattern for Reliable Event Publishing

Transactional Outbox Pattern for Reliable Event Publishing

Learn how the transactional outbox pattern helps applications publish events reliably without losing consistency between database changes and messages.

Applications that update a database and publish a message can face a consistency problem: the database transaction may succeed while message delivery fails, or a message may be published even though the database transaction rolls back. The transactional outbox pattern addresses this by storing the business change and an event record in the same database transaction. A separate worker reads pending outbox records and publishes them to a message broker. After delivery, the worker marks each record as processed or tracks its progress. This design avoids relying on a distributed transaction between the database and broker, but still requires careful handling of retries, duplicate delivery, ordering, and cleanup. Consumers should be idempotent because an event may be delivered more than once. The pattern is useful in event-driven systems where reliable integration between services matters.
